The experience

What you'll get to experience

Some of the Riverland’s most beautiful moments happen in just a couple of hours at either end of the day. At sunrise, the river is glassy and still, mist lifts off the water and the birdlife wakes up around you. At sunset, the limestone cliffs glow gold and red, the gums are reflected in the water, and the pelicans settle in for the evening. Justin knows exactly where to be as the light changes, so he’ll find the right spot, cut the motor and let you take it all in. Two hours, private to your group, timed to the sun.

Golden sunrise breaking over the tree line and reflecting on calm water by the boat ramp
Warm golden sunset light washing over the Murray River and distant limestone cliffs
Guests in the tour tinny drifting quietly down a tranquil creek surrounded by river red gums

Tour highlights

Departing Waikerie or Berri at sunrise or sunset, you’ll see:

  • Mirror-still water and morning mist
  • Cliffs glowing gold and red
  • Birdlife waking up or settling in
  • River red gums against a changing sky
  • Quiet backwaters with no one else around
  • The best light of the day for photos

Depending on your departure town, highlights may include Maize Island, Toolunka Creek, Broken Cliffs, Gurra Gurra Wetland and the Wilabalangaloo cliffs.

Sunrise or sunset?

Same tinny, same price, two very different moods. Sunrise brings the stillest water of the day and the river waking up around you. Sunset is the slow, golden finish, with the cliffs lit up and the birds heading home. Tell us which you’d prefer and we’ll time it to the sun on your date.

Why two hours?

The best light doesn’t last long, and two hours captures all of it. You’ll be on the water as the colours build and back on land before it’s dark, without a 4am start. If you’d like to travel further and see more of the river, the three-hour tour is the one for you.

Time to drift

This isn’t a tour about covering distance. When the light is right, Justin cuts the motor and lets the river do the rest. You’ll have time for photos, time to watch the birdlife, and time to just sit in the quiet.

Everything included

Just turn up: the tinny, Justin as your skipper and guide, fuel, lifejackets and the safety equipment are all taken care of. We do suggest bringing:

  • A warm layer. It’s cooler on the water at dawn and dusk, even in summer.
  • Non-slip shoes. Boarding is from a pontoon or the foreshore.
  • Sunglasses. The sun sits low, right in your eyes.
  • A camera. You’ll want it.
